Prevention You may be able to reduce your risk of prostate cancer by taking a close look at your diet and making some strategic, nutritional changes.
-
Eating less red meat and fat, and more vegetables, fruits and whole grains is recommended. Strive to eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon are rich in substances called lycopenes, which help prevent damage to DNA and may help lower prostate cancer risk.
-
Taking vitamin E daily may lower the risk of prostate cancer, but some studies have found that vitamin E has no impact on cancer risk and might raise the risk for some kinds of heart disease. Before starting any vitamins or other supplements, you should talk with your doctor.
Early Detection Prostate cancer can often be found early by testing the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. Another way to find prostate cancer early is the digital rectal exam (DRE). However, research has not yet proven that the potential benefits of testing outweigh the harms of testing and treatment.
Starting at age 50, talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of testing so you can decide if testing is the right choice for you. |
