Prevention  Although some people who get lung cancer do not have any known risk factors, the best way to prevent lung cancer is not to smoke. You should also avoid breathing in other people's smoke. Radon is also a cause of lung cancer. You can lower your exposure by having your home tested and treated, if needed.

Protecting yourself from cancer-causing chemicals at work and elsewhere, can be helpful in preventing lung cancer. When people work where these exposures are common, they should be kept as low as possible.

A good diet with lots of fruits and vegetables may also help prevent lung cancer.

Early Detection  Although there is not currently a universally accepted screening test for lung cancer, researchers are studying different methods for early detection. Visit the National Cancer Institute Web site for the latest information.

If you're concerned about your risk of lung cancer, talk to your doctor to determine strategies to reduce your risk and decide whether screening tests are appropriate for you.
